Frequently Asked Plastering Questions

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers about our plastering services.

Yes, you can plater over paint. However its esential to prepare the painted surface before platering Plaster won’t adhere to glossy, flaking, or greasy paint. Therfore it’s absolutely critical to fully prepare the surafe. We will use a utility knife and coarse sandpaper to score or roughen the wall or ceiling paint. This helps the plaster grip better and reduce the risk craks or delamination. We use a bonding primer like Blue Grit before platering over paint

Generally, no. Plaster will not adhere properly to smooth wooden surfaces. This makes plater unsuitable for direct application to a wooden surface. However, plaster can be applied over wooden laths (slits or strips) that are specifically designed for plastering. Wooden laths have gaps that allow the plaster to key into the structure, creating a strong bond and a durable finish. If you’re working with timber surfaces a backing material or mesh is required for proper adhesion.

Yes, wallpaper must be removed before plastering. If wallpaper is not removed and adhesion of the plaster not be suficient and will crack or come off the walls or ceiling. We offer a wallaper removal service and can give you a quote once we have had a good look at the condition of the walls when the wallpaper has been removed.

Allow 7 to 14 days typically for skim coats or multi-finish plaster. This allows the moisture to fully evaporate and the surface to cure fully before a mist coat of paint can be applied. Don’t rush as painting over plater too soon will result in paint bubbles, flaking and cracking.

The plastered wall or ceiling should be uniformly light pink or pale beige in colour with no dark patches. The plastered wall should feel dry to the touch, not cool or damp.

When a platered wall is ready for paint, we start with a mist coat. A mist coat is emulsion paint that has been diluted with water (usually 70% paint and 30% water). This misting helps to seal the platered surface before applying emulion paint. Misting allows the paint bond properly and prevents future flaking and craking of paint.
