How to choose the right roller for a smooth finish?
We are often asked to repaint walls that appear textured and not smooth. One of the main reasons for this textured appearance in the finish of wall and ceilings is often due to the incorrect selection of pile length. The following guide will help you in selecting the correct pile length to get a smooth or textured wall and ceiling finish.
Short Pile

Short Pile roller sleeves provide a smooth finish. It’s best to use short pile on smooth plaster, drywall or ceilings. A shorter pile puts down less paint and gives you a smooth finish. Great if you’re painting a similar colour over the previous one, but if colour change is significant you should consider a medium pile as it will lay down more paint and increase coverage. Short pile rollers can also be used with gloss, satin or silk paints.
Medium Pile

Medium pile is the most popular choice for emulsion paints and suitable for smooth to semi-smooth surfaces such as plaster, drywall and ceilings (including light to medium textured). Great option for emulsion colour changes both similar to the previous one and more substantial such as light to dark or vice-versa. Where rooms have been previously painted with medium pile it’s best to stick to using the same pile length to math the finish and lessen the amount of sanding required.
Long Pile

Long pile rollers are best used for rough surfaces such as brick, breeze blocks, cement and render. The longer pile is effective at getting into the surface texture, as well as interior walls and ceilings (heavily textured plasters such as artex). The longer pile lays down plenty of paint making it suitable for colour changes . Long pile won’t give a finish smooth finish compared to medium or short pile rollers.
Extra Long Pile

Extra long pile is best used for rough and very rough masonry surfaces such as brick, breeze block, cement, heavily textured renders (exterior cement plaster) or pebbledash. The long pile gives maximum paint loading essential for efficiency when painting masonry so you’re reloading less often, getting into surface textures for rapid application without missing areas and allowing the paint to be pushed into the texture.
